On Monday, January 21, 2008, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) will join the rest of the nation honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. There will be no school on this day, and all school system offices will be closed. Students will return to school on Tuesday, January 22, 2008. Many GCPS students will participate in MLK Day events organized by community organizations.
In celebration of the national holiday, the United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County Inc. has invited GCPS students to participate in its annual MLK parade in downtown Lawrenceville, and a program at Central Gwinnett High immediately following the parade.
The program highlights essays written by Gwinnett students using this year’s theme, “The Dream, Delivering on the Promise.” Students of all grade levels were invited to write an essay, and several of them will represent their schools reading the essays during the program. Student participants will wear a t-shirt especially designed for the event by a Collins Hill High student. The shirts will be available for purchase that day.
The United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County Inc. is a community-based organization whose purpose is to strengthen and promote community awareness by reaching out to all citizens of Gwinnett County to develop friendly relations.
