Gwinnett DOT dispatched crews throughout the night Tuesday evening to respond to Tuesday's heavy storms. In all, more than 55 calls for service came in during a 12-hour period beginning around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Nine members of the road maintenance crew removed fallen trees from 23 different locations throughout the county. They have also worked today to repair a wash-out on Mineral Springs Road. The traffic signal crew’s five members responded to more than 35 calls. These included the replacement of signal controllers, monitors, cabinet, signal heads and signal outages.
The storms also kept firefighters busy. A total of 143 incidents were dispatched between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. All were storm related except for a host of EMS calls and a request for mutual-aid from Walton County. The City of Loganville Fire Department filled the mutual-aid request based on the heavy call volume in Gwinnett.
Fire crews responded to calls that included alarms, structure fires, trees down, collapses, vehicle accidents, wires down, woods fires and several citizen assists. The most significant damage was a house fire that was caused by a lightning strike at 3105 Bugle Drive in Duluth. The blaze completely destroyed the single-story home, according to Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge. He also reported that several houses received some degree of damage from lightning strikes or downed trees and two reports were received for motorists stranded in water from the heavy rain. No injuries and no fatalities were reported as a result of the storms.
