Gwinnett Seniors Celebrate Older Americans Month

Published May 24, 2008

May is Older Americans Month, so what better way to celebrate than by having a senior picnic?

More than 100 active senior citizens in Gwinnett County gathered at Pinckneyville Park Friday, May 23 for some music, southern-fried chicken and light-hearted conversation with their peers.

The event started at 10:00 a.m. with the seniors’ favorite card games, snacks and music by the All Star Band, which ended after lunch.

Gwinnett County’s senior activity centers in Buford, Lawrenceville and Norcross hosted the annual picnic as a way to bring the seniors that attend their centers together for a day to meet new people and celebrate being young.

Tom Puckett, born and raised in Georgia, has been attending the Lawrenceville Senior Center for 21 years. “Every time I leave, I end up coming back,” he said with a spring in his voice.

For some seniors, the interaction they get with others at the activity centers is the only time they spend with others all week, making events like the picnic a real treat.

Other activities Gwinnett County Senior Services is offering for Older Americans Month are a Mall Walk and Lunch at Discover Mills on May 29, along with a group activity on May 30.
